Reading Activities

Choose any activity from this list that appeals to you and see where it takes you--be curious, reflective and connect to your reading! Most importantly--have fun along the way!

Playlist for Reading

Create a playlist inspired by your reading using SoundCloud, Spotify, 8tracksradio, iTunes or tool of your choice.  Songs can be from the place you read about, have similar themes, were mentioned in your book or just seem like a good fit--it’s your playlist.  Be creative, have fun, and don't forget to share it!

Predict the Future!

Stop reading somewhere in the middle of the book and take a few minutes to contemplate how the book ends.  Make a drawing, some doodles, a brainstorm, a poem, or even write a story telling your version of the ending.  Set it aside, finish reading and compare notes.  How do your predictions size up?  What ending do you prefer--yours or the authors?

Poetry anyone?

Write a poem in response to your book.  Try economizing on words with a haiku, try your hand at an acrostic poem, or have a laugh with a limerick!  Your choice!  Share it with a friend or on social media.

 #Bookface or Reading Selfie

Take a picture of you and your book with a #bookface picture or a reading selfie and post it to twitter, facebook, instagram or your social media outlet of choice!

 Make A Comic Strip

Have a favorite part of the book? Make your own comic strip illustrating your favorite scene or use your book as your inspiration point. If you're an artist, draw your own.  Otherwise, try Pixton to make a quick and fun comic strip!

Book Tasting

Find a restaurant that serves food from your novel’s setting, or find a recipe for one of the foods mentioned in your novel. Invite your book club or reading buddies to eat and discuss the themes and characters from your summer reading.

Travel from your couch

Get inspired by a book and watch a related movie!  Movies can be based on the book, like He Named me Malala or can be from the same area of the world as a book, such as Antarctica: A Year on Ice. Get creative, pop some popcorn, and travel the world from the comfort of your own sofa!

Find a Podcast

Rest your eyes and listen to some podcasts.  Try searching PodCrawler, iTunes or podcasts.com or another site.  Podcasts can be based on the same theme as a book.
Example:
The Faceless Ghost pairs perfectly with the podcast The Creepiest Ghost and Monster Stories from Around the World
You can also search out a podcast inspired by a book such as:
After reading I am Malala learn about other strong women in history and listen to the History Chick's podcasts

Living Literature Activity

Grab your friends or reading club to recreate a memorable scene from one of the books from your summer reading list.  Props can also be used. Take a picture and share in the comments section below the book.  Remember to follow all school engagement rules, but most of all have fun!

DIY Book Cover

Take a book that you have read this summer and create a new book cover for it.  Use whatever medium you feel will work best for your work of art.  Pencil, markers, oil pastel, photography, the choices are endless.
